First Week of College

College is a whole different ballpark compared to high school. In high school you have a daily routine and you go to the same classes every day of the week. College you go to different classes every day and you have to schedule in time to eat, study and most important of all... sleep. I love being able to make my own schedule and being able to have time to do what ever I want when I want to. At the same time, I dislike it. Having the ability to control my schedule places a pressure on me to do everything I can to make 'A's' in my classes. I feel that if I cannot do that then I have misused my time and I cannot blame it on lack of time, because when I am not in the pool, I have plenty of time. I miss all of the friendships that I made in high school. I will not get to see any of my friends from high school until I go home at break. The only connections I have with my high school friends are the memories we made together. I am sad that I cannot continue those memories today, but I am in the process of making new ones with my new college friends. I hope that the memories and friendships to come are as good as the ones that have happened.

Ever since I was little and I played in the cul-de-sac with my friends, we always talked about what college we wanted to go to when we were older. Texas Tech, Texas A&M, OLLU, and even the dreaded other school (UT) was mentioned at one pointed but was quickly discarded. We always played games and we pretended that we were older and working at our dream jobs. One girl wanted to be an animal doctor, another a fashion designer. I always wanted to be a doctor for as long as I can remember. I did not care how many years I had to spend in school to achieve this dream, I just wanted to get there and say 'I did it!'. As the years passed by, my college list changed depending on the season. My senior year appoached and I tried to make my final selections. I had it narrowed down to TLU and a college in upstate New York. I choose TLU... then I was contacted by Corey White, a swim coach for Converse College offering me scholarship money to swim for his team. He happened to be leaving in a few weeks to coach in Austin, TX for the summer. So I made plans with him to drive out to Austin to meet him. Right after we meet, I had a feeling that Converse was the right school for me. I took a risk after that and I got plane tickets to fly to Spartanburg to see the school. I saw the campus and immediately got a warm, fuzzy feeling and I knew that Converse was the right school for me. Now that I am here, I realize that I really did make the right choice for me. Converse is a perfect match for me.

  1. Tori,
Your entry is well written and thoughtful. I am sure that you will make both lasting memories and friendships here at Converse. The risk that you took to leave Texas will surely pay off.
